How well do you manage dangerous situations
16.11.2020 by User61433B90

Just thought to ask around, how do you succeed in situations that involve saving a human life or other situations which are dangerous to you and do you think alexithymia helps you?

And do you think that the inability to feel fear might make you partially blind to risks involved in certain situations? Evaluating risks and fear have nothing in common, but being afraid might make you act different despite of seemingly lack of risks.

I handle negative situations like physical accidents very well and the worst part comes after everything is over and people start going through it emotionally and it makes me seem like I did not care at all. Which I do not really, but I'd still rather see the positive outcome always play out.

In the traffic, beside fast moments like making quick maneuvers to not hit something, threats that are more distant when I had perhaps 5-7 seconds or more when sliding towards a truck on an icy hill road was very interesting. I just became curious of the challenge posed, whether I make it or not and started testing controls what works out and thinking of possible outcomes and what comes after that (do I keep on the road, go under the truck or to the ditch and what then)

I value my life and I guess feel supposedly a bit angry or let down; I do not know, when somebody steers their vehicle towards mine at high speeds (I do not know whether one case was an attempted suicide or just plain stupid). At the same I really do not care at all and hope the driver noticed his mistake and learns from it.

Evaluating risks and fear have in common that fear is an evolutionary ingrained (pre-programmed) version of risk-evaluation.

Given (or rather assuming) that environments nowadays change more quickly than evolution can keep up with, I'm inclined to think that alexithymia is superior in the scenario you described.

However, taking it a a few steps further, I can also imagine ways in which a mostly calculating society might function and I personally don't like many of them.
