Borderline/autism and alexi?
25.03.2018 by blacktourmaline

Hi. I just found out about alexithymia tonight and took the test - 114. For the categories, I was either really low or really high in all of them.

I'm in the process of getting treatment for emotional dysregulation (they're unsure if i am borderline or on the spectrum at this point). I have really intense emotions, but I can't really label them or explain them. I can explain what I am doing (screaming, crying, obsessing, etc) and give basic labels (good, bad, angry, happy) but I can't get any more nuanced than that. I also have a hard time figuring out what my body wants / what affects it - for example, it took me years to connect drinking coffee to specific sensations, or to figure out what sensory things overload/help me.

Does anyone else find this? What are your experiences with emotional dysregulation and alexithymia?

What are your coping tools / etc? I have a list of feelings that I carry around with me to try to label them, but i still have a hard time picking them out.

Why make the effort?

I most feel nothing, but when I do I generally have no idea what it is that I'm feeling. That's just the way things are, I accept that and I couldn't be bothered why things are that way or waste my time seeking to change them.

I have Autism(PDD-NOS) and blame it on my alexithymia or my alexithymia on my Autism. I'm much better at identifying my emotions thanks to mindfulness meditation but I'm still at a toddler stage as for actually expressing them to others. I've also developed Schizo-Affective Disorder

While the incidence of alexithymia is higher among those on the autistic spectrum no causal link between the two conditions has ever been established. There are autism people who aren't Alexithymic and there are non autistic people who are.
