Should I find a therapist?
15.04.2018 by DraScuS

My test result for Alexithymia is 167, and my friends and family seemed to be really confused by my symptoms. Nobody knows about my test score yet. Personally, it is less of a problem, and I don't think this matters to me, at least for now. Should I find a therapist and work things out for my family and friends?

If it's not a problem with you and the issue is that they do not understand (reasonable, it's not typical behavior), then feel free to explain to them for their own benefit and mutual understanding. Otherwise, what do you have to gain from a therapist?

Appreciated your answer. One thing, should I at least be diagnosed? I get the idea that I most likely had the trait, but should I get an official result? I think it will help me explain.

Sorry I've been away! If you want to pursue any of it for your own understanding, by all means. Since alexithymia isn't in the DSM 4 or 5, I would not expect a diagnosis. At a glance, it looks like you can't except as a descriptor for a primary, diagnosable condition. But I'm not a professional, of course.

Yes. Talk to a professional, let them know. They'll know best how to handle things and what to do.
